Pet Care & News

Something that we are frequently asked is how to store hay to keep it as fresh as possible. Here's a guide for how to keep your pets hay clean, green and fresh for every serving.

Dark Space

Hay is vulnerable to 'bleaching' from UV light. Our hay is greener than traditionally made hay as we dry it inside rather than using sunlight to dry the hay as this starts the bleaching process. Keep your hay away from daylight to keep it as green as possible. Either keeping it in the cardboard box with the lid closed if you have purchased an eco-box or choose a container that will stop the light getting to it.

Dry Space

Hay should be kept in a dry location, away from any sources of damp as this will prevent mold growth. Ensure good air circulation around the hay. This helps to keep it dry and reduces the risk of mold and mildew too.

Temperature

Hay should be protected from extreme of temperature or sudden temperature changes. If hay is kept too hot it will sweat out the remaining moisture which will then lead to spoilage.

Use By Date

Because hay is a natural product that doesn’t need preservatives or additions to keep it fresh it does not expire like other food types do. When stored in the proper conditions, hay will retain its nutritional values for a long time. We have previously stored hay in our barns for up to 2 years which has still been clean, green and delicious when reaching our customers.
