Alfalfa Hay is a specialist donation with a very specific and important role in a rescue setting. If you are looking to support sanctuaries caring for the most vulnerable animals, including babies, juveniles, pregnant or nursing mothers, and those arriving underweight or recovering from illness, this is the donation that will make the most direct difference.

Thanks to the incredible success of our Christmas Rescue Box Appeal in 2023, we were able to support so many rescues in need. Sadly, many of our favourite rescues are still struggling with rising costs, so we've relaunched our Rescue Box Appeal to help provide hay, forage, and essentials to the animals who need it most.

We've selected a few partner rescues to support, and these will rotate throughout the year, ensuring more rescues benefit from your generosity.

💡 If you add other products to your basket, those items will be shipped to your own address unless you let us know in your order notes that they should also be sent to the rescue.

Unlike grass hays, Alfalfa is a legume, making it significantly higher in calcium and protein. This nutritional profile means it is not appropriate as a daily hay for healthy adult animals, but it is invaluable for young animals up to six months old and for adults that need a concentrated nutritional boost during recovery. For rescues that regularly receive animals in poor condition or take in litters and young animals, having Alfalfa on hand can be critical to supporting a healthy recovery and development. Grown at a neighbouring farm in Oxfordshire and barn dried to the same high standards as all Little Hay Co produce, our careful drying process retains the vitamins, minerals, colour and fragrance that make this hay so nutritionally valuable.

Once animals have matured or recovered, transitioning to a grass hay such as our Pure Timothy or Cotswold Sweet is recommended.

Delivery is £4.95 and sent with DPD on a next day trackable service.

When ordering a 5kg or 10kg eco box please ensure you have a dry/sheltered 'safe place' if you are not able to be home for your delivery.
