Pet Care & News

Hayfever, or allergic rhinitis, is often triggered by pollen from grasses, trees, and weeds, rather than the hay itself. However, if you are sensitive to hay, some types may cause fewer symptoms.

Here are a few types of hay that tend to cause fewer allergy issues:

Silky Soft Hay –  As this hay is a later cutting it tends to have fewer seed heads and less pollen compared to the 1st cut of Timothy.

Oat Hay – Because this is not a grass hay it does not contain the same pollen's that trigger hay fever.

Alfalfa hay – As a legume, not a grass, it may produce fewer pollen-related issues, though it is only suitable for pets up to 6 months old.

To reduce hay fever symptoms further:

  • Use hay that is well-cured (dry, with minimal dust)
  • Use air purifiers or handle hay in well-ventilated areas.
